Marquette
Golf Club (Greywalls Course)
The dramatic Greywalls golf course in the Upper Peninsula
of Michigan had a banner year in 2005, as it received several highly
acclaimed national awards. Greywalls received national awards from Golf
Magazine, Golf Digest, and most recently, Travel + Leisure Golf and
Golfweek, which recently honored the layout as one of the best in Michigan.
Michigan's Upper Peninsula offers an all-too-brief season,
but what it lacks in quantity it makes up for in quality, especially
with this year's addition of the Greywalls course at Marquette Golf
Club. Architect Mike DeVries grabbed this rugged site by the shoulders
and shook loose 18 distinctive challenges in a rough-and-tumble layout.
DeVries used the exposed granite here in every way possible--as jagged
hazards alongside the fairways and as aiming points behind greens. Views
of Lake Superior greet you on the first tee, and everything that follows--from
the approach on the 579-yard par-5 first to the forested, downhill,
saddle-shaped 18th fairway--lives up to the lake's name. Potential disasters
loom throughout the round. DeVries accomplished a minor miracle in routing
such a variety of holes on such a difficult site, and you'll tip your
hard hat to his labors.
"On my exclusive Yikes-meter scale of 1 to 10, this course starts
as an 11. Not that the course stays perched on the edge of doom. Nothing
this exhilarating can be sustained. Greywalls, a new course on a stunning
site in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, starts off like a mythic medieval
quest. The golfer might feel like he is battling fire-breathing dragons,
armored knights and monsters from the netherworld along the way."

Course Information
Front 9
The Red Fox Run Golf Course offers two distinct designs. The front nine
features generous landing areas and well-bunkered greens. Your long
irons will need to be sharp for the three challenging par 3 hole included
in this nine.
Back 9
The back nine is set up for the shot maker. Narrow, tree-lined fairways
put a premium on driving accuracy. New tee boxes have been constructed
on holes 11 and 15, adding substantial length to the demanding par 3
eleventh hole and the once drivable par 4 fifteenth hole. The par 4
seventeenth hole and par 5 eighteenth hole are two of the most challenging
finishing holes that you will play in the entire Upper Peninsula. Both
holes feature severe topographical changes.
